What Causes ADD/ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)?
The main cause of ADD is insufficient production of the chemicals Dopamine and Noradrenalin in the base of the Brain. Dopamine and Noradrenalin activate the Frontal Lobes of the Brain and when there is a shortage of Dopamine and Noradrenalin the Frontal Lobes are Sluggish, Underactive and don’t work properly. Because of this other parts of the Brain don’t work properly as they are controlled by the Frontal Lobes. Brain Dopamine and Noradrenalin levels can be boosted by taking the Stimulants Dexamphetamine or Ritalin, or SNRI Antidepressants such as Sertraline, Reboxetine, Venlafaxine, Mirtazepine or Fluvoxamine, which also boost Noradrenalin and Dopamine levels. Many people with undiagnosed or untreated ADD self medicate with Methamphetamine (Ice) or Cocaine but these chemicals are dangerously excessive in their effect.
Approximately 20% of ADD sufferers have Overactive as well as Underactive parts of their Brain and many have Bipolar Disorder. In both of these cases there is irritability and this can be made worse by Noradrenalin Boosting, Medications and Street Drugs. Mood Stabilisers such as Carbamazepine given with the Noradrenalin boosters fix this problem.
Approximately 40% of an ADD sufferer’s children inherit ADD, which is passed on to them through the Genes at conception. Approximately half of the children with ADD grow out of it by the time they are adults. The other half suffer from ADD right through to old age.
ADD is made much worse by Foods and Drinks with Artificial Chemicals in them (Colouring Agents, Preservatives and Taste Additives). Over thousands of years the Bodies, Brains and Genes of our Ancestors adapted to a very Physical Lifestyle and to a diet of Fresh Foods and Drinks that all came from Nature. In the lifetime of the last 2 or 3 generations of the population modern conveniences have reduced our physical activity and exercise by 70 or 80% and many of our foods and drinks have large amounts of artificial chemicals added to them.
These chemicals have mostly been developed over the last 100 years in laboratories and factories and don’t grow or occur in nature. Our bodies and brains will take thousands of years to fully adapt to some of these chemicals.
A lack of exercise and all of the artificial chemicals in our diet seriously alter the Circulation and Chemistry of our Body and Brain. While many people can cope with these changes people with ADD can’t cope with them. A very important part of treating ADD is normalising Body and Brain Circulation and Chemistry by going back to a Lifestyle more like our Ancestors’ Lifestyle – lots of physical activity, exercise, fresh foods and water and a minimum of artificial chemicals.
If from an early age children are raised with more of an “Ancestral” Diet and Lifestyle they are likely to continue in that way for the rest of their lives and ADD will be minimised. Two other very damaging Lifestyle caused Disorders, Type II Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome, will be minimised at the same time by that Lifestyle and Diet.
