How can I manage ADD?
In ADD the front of the Brain is
Under Stimulated, Under Active and doesn’t work properly because there is not
enough of the activating chemicals Noradrenalin and Dopamine being produced in
the Base of the Brain. In the past ADD was simply treated with the medications
Dexamphetamine or Ritalin, which restore more normal brain function by
stimulating the Base of the Brain to produce more Noradrenalin and Dopamine. Today we use much more effective Holistic treatments which often include Dexamphetamine, Ritalin or Stimulate Antidepressants.
In about 20% of cases of ADD there is Over Stimulation and Over Activity of other parts of the brain as well as the Under Stimulation and Under Activity of the Front of the Brain. Dexamphetamine, Ritalin and Stimulate Antidepressants make these 20% of cases worse because they make the Overstimulated Overactive parts of the brain even more Overstimulated and Overactive. This causes Irritability and Anger and sometimes Rage or Violence but those problems are now easily fixed with Mood Stabilizers.
A Comprehensive Holistic Approach is far more effective than the old simplistic inadequate Dexamphetamine/Ritalin approach. This new approach solves the problem of the Overactive Irritable parts of the Brain, as well as the problems of the Underactive parts, through Omprehensive Diagnosis, Information about Brain Disorders, exercise, Diet, Stimulant and Stabilizing Medications and Counselling.
This holistic approach should involve firstly of getting a clear understanding of ALL aspects of your Brain Disturbances and not just of your ADD. e.g. we want to know if you have any Anxiety, Depression, Sleep Disorder or Bipolar Disorder etc as well as the ADD, because ADD nearly always occurs in association with other Disorders. Once ALL of the Disorders are identified ALL of those problems should be treated. Multidisciplinary Treatments should including Lifestyle Changes (diet, exercise, choice of education and training and choice of work), a “Tailor Made” Program of carefully selected Medications, plus Coaching, Counselling and EEG Biofeedback (if available).
