What is ADD/ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)?
ADD is a Brain Malfunction Disorder – the commonest Human Brain Disorder there is. On average 1 child in 15 (2 children in a class of 30) suffer from ADD. In ADD the Front Part of the Brain is sluggish because of a shortage of the Brain chemicals Noradrenalin and Dopamine. The sluggishness of the Frontal Lobes of the Brain causes poor Attention, Focussing, Concentration and other Thinking, Feeling and Performance problems. So ADD sufferers have many Discomforts and Dysfunctions.
ADD can be mild or moderate or so severe that the sufferers’ life is endangered, usually through alcohol, street drugs or accidents. ADD is often not diagnosed or not adequately treated and people with moderate to severe ADD in desperation frequently try to get relief from street drugs. Some then end up as addicts and in my experience 60% of heroin addiction is due to ADD. ADD is sometimes called “The Addictive Brain Disorder”. ADD people often suffer further because many clinics try to get them off alcohol and street drugs without diagnosing their ADD or without giving them proper ADD treatment to replace those drugs. Without proper diagnosis and treatment they relapse over and over again to street drugs. I have treated heroin addicts who have been detoxed more than a dozen times at various other clinics. They got better and stayed better once their ADD was diagnosed.
The new Spect Brain Scans have now enabled us to see that in many cases of ADD there are Overactive Parts of the Brain as well as the sluggish Underactive Frontal Parts. Overactive areas cause Irritability and sometimes Anger and Rage – e.g. Chronic Grumpiness, and in more extreme cases Road Rage and Domestic Violence, especially when there is associated street amphetamine or alcohol abuse. This Irritability is made worse by Stimulants such as Dexamphetamine, Ritalin and some Antidepressants but this problem can be easily prevented by taking a Mood Stabilizer (Carbamazepine, Lamotrigine or Sodium Valproate) with the Stimulant.
Spect Brain Scans combined with detailed analysis of the Discomforts and Dysfunctions which people with ADD suffer from have now shown that there are 6 different types of ADD (Google Dr Daniel Amen of California for more detail) Most people with ADD have a combination of several of these 6 different types of ADD. The 6 types are Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Inattentive or Day Dreaming ADD (ADDD), Overfocused ADD (ADOD), Temporal Lobe or Attention Deficit Aggravated Disorder (ADAD), Limbic or Low ADD (ADLD), and Ring of Fire ADD (ADAD++) which is rare.
To determine whether you show any features of any of the 6 different types of ADD go to www.DrBecksChecklists.com and do the Mini Checklist. Within 20 or 30 minutes you will have a Report printed out that will tell you what features of Nervous Disorders you have, if any. If the Mini Checklist shows that ADD is your highest scoring Nervous Disorder then do the more detailed MAXI ADD Checklist. If other Nervous Disorders score higher than ADD you should seek treatment for them all in the descending order in which they are listed in your Report.
